This June we celebrate Michael Lloyd’s 70th birthday with a collection of new work; each a love letter to the flora and fauna that continues to inspire his work. Explore Reflections | Michael Lloyd at 70 and discover his new collection online. We have also produced a series of blogs with imagery, film, music and words from Michael Lloyd himself.
Please enjoy our next installment in which Michael discusses his inspiration and introduces us to two of the seven pieces created for this exhibition – the The Rose Garden and Thorn Weave Dish.
The Rose Garden
In the short film below Michael Lloyd introduces us to the The Rose Garden as we join him in his garden in Dumfries & Galloway.
Michael Lloyd, 2020I hear you dismiss my love of leaf and petal as simple pleasure. You fail to see the miracle your eyes reveal, so revelling in my simplicity like some deluded alchemist, I turn each atom of delight
into a gilded lily; my gift
to you.

Thorn Weave Dish
In the short film below Michael Lloyd introduces us to the Thorn Weave Dish and explains part of his making process as we join him in his studio.
Michael Lloyd, diary entry 22nd MarchLate, but planted my last nine oak trees. Found very long lengths of bramble, cut the thick stalk into two loops, pushed into the ground and wove the remainder into a cage, which should keep the rabbits and deer off. Not the wee beasties unfortunately.
