We are delighted to present Where Sky Meets Earth, an exhibition of new work by Janise Yntema, an American artist who lives and works in Brussels. She combines fine art with philosophy and specialises in the ancient painting technique of beeswax encaustic. Since 2000, Janise has encompassed our landscape and atmospheric weather into her practice: Scotland has become her spiritual home.

Janise YntemaMy painting methods reflect the possibilities of layered histories: starting points, erasures and eradications through an accumulated language of restrained colour and line.
PRESS | THE SUNDAY POST
‘These serene landscapes have been created following visits to Oban, Mull, Staffa, Fingal’s Cave, Fort William, Mallaig, Skye, Portree, Ullapool, Inverness, St Andrews, Perth and Edinburgh.
They are not place specific, but with titles such as Alternate Realms and As Day Begins, they create a mood of silent sublime airiness.’

In all her work she draws on her own early, formative experiences in the landscape, each painting a glimpse of temps perdu. This mixed media exhibition embraces the senses – these are exquisitely made artworks which pack an emotional punch.
Enjoy this short studio insights film below, where Janise talks through the lengthy encaustic process.
