Dylan BowenBorn: 1967
Place of Birth: Devon
Dylan Bowen trained with Clive Bowen at Shebbear Pottery before taking a degree in Ceramics at Camberwell School of Art, graduating in 1991. He then worked with various potters in the USA before spending a number of years working as a builder and decorator in London and Oxford. Dylan then returned to pottery ans set up a studio and began making domestic earthenware in Oxford in 1998. Dylan moved to his current workshop in Tackley in 2002.
Dylan's work began as an attempt to produce a range of domestic ware but has become increasingly abstract and more concerned with one off sculptural pieces and variations on a small range of shapes. Dylan uses traditional slipware techniques and materials preferring red earthenware clay, a white slip made from Devon ballclay and other coloured slips. The work is thrown then adapted or altered. Some pieces are handbuilt and carved or pressed and distorted using various tools and techniques. The slips are poured, trailed or brushed on as soon as possible after the work is made. The pieces are then fired with clear or honey glaze.
Dylans current work is attempting to combine decorating and making in a spontaneous and direct way and influences include abstract expressionism, early slipware, American Studio Ceramics and music.
