Susan Hipgrave

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and with two decades of art direction in advertising behind her, Sydney-based artist Susan Hipgrave has discovered a true passion for painting on porcelain – her preferred ‘canvas’.

Using a fine hairline brush, each exquisitely detailed artwork reflects the accomplished combination of a steady hand and an expert eye. Inspired by the diverse beauty of botany and wildlife, Susan’s black-and-white work captures the stunning intricacy of her subjects; every nuanced stroke imbued with a fine energy that demands closer inspection.

"When I’m contemplating a new piece, I start by going through my collection of natural history books until I find something that 'speaks' to me. I work with it in terms of size and placement, and then begins the slow and meditative practice of putting paint to porcelain. I obsess about how fine a line I can do; ultimately, I love seeing all the little black lines that I’ve painted come together to create an image." - Susan Hipgrave

It’s this aptitude for detail, and the pleasure it brings that has seen Susan’s work at Sydney’s Botanic Gardens in October 2012 and ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’ at Melbourne’s MARS Gallery in April 2013.
