Barbara Balmer studied at Coventry College of Art before enrolling in The Edinburgh College of Art.She first exhibited her work in 1953 after completing a travelling scholarship to France and Spain. Her work is held in many private and public collections, including a large mural in Cumbernald Town Hall. She worked in landscape, still life and portraiture in oil, watercolour and lithograph. Balmer was the subject of over twenty solo exhibitions in her lifetime, and she was a regular exhibitor at The Royal Scottish Academy, The Society of Scottish Artists and The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
