John Clerk of Eldin

John Clerk of Eldin, born in Penicuik and educated at The University of Edinburgh, was an important figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He was well known for publishing work about naval tactics and as a merchant, but after his retirement he devoted his time to the study of geology, architecture and art. He started etching in his 40s, and produced over one hundred in his lifetime, mostly of landscapes and historical buildings.
