Joyce Gunn Cairns earned a degree in German and Comparative Religion before turning to Edinburgh College of Art to study Drawing and Painting. She has exhibited  extensively in The UK and Europe, since the 1980s. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, The Scottish Poetry Library, Edinburgh University, Newcastle University and Balliol College, Oxford and Jesus College, Cambridge. She was awarded MBE for services to the arts in the June 2004 Queen’s Honours List.
