Dame Elizabeth Blackadder | A Celebration is part of our Wonder Women series for the Edinburgh Festival 2023.
Elizabeth Blackadder enjoyed a close working relationship with The Scottish Gallery from 1950s onwards, mounting several one-person shows and countless survey exhibitions which helped place the artist in a national context. Blackadder had a remarkable career; she was the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Academy, London and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and was honoured with a damehood in 2003.
The Scottish Gallery commissioned the Edinburgh Film Company to combine Elizabeth Blackadder’s studio and archive and create a new film for the Festival. The film includes audio recordings which were made of the artist in 2006 for the British Library. You can now listen to Blackadder in her own words, with the photographs and paintings from her exhibition. We are showing this alongside the making of her latest tapestry at Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh and National Gallery of Scotland film. Watch below!
