Collect 2023

Collect returns to Somerset House in London from 3-5 March 2023. Collect, the leading international fair for contemporary craft and design, is an exceptional opportunity to discover and acquire new, museum-quality artworks from over 400 international artists at the height of their careers.  Collect focuses on exclusivity, reputation, rich narrative and thoughtful curation – seeking variety and diversity in its content and vision. Galleries from South Korea, China, France, Ireland, The Netherlands, USA, Lebanon and the UK will present works that span the widest range of craft disciplines.

Amongst the exhibiting artists is our very own Elizabeth Jane Campbell – as well as working at The Scottish Gallery, Elizabeth is an award winning jeweller specialising in contemporary enamel. Her new designs, created especially for Collect, will be shown with Craft Scotland alongside a selection of other Scottish makers.

For Collect 2023 with Craft Scotland I have made a series of works inspired by the secondary colours – purple, green, and orange. The pair of brooches are inspired by the colour orange. I took inspiration from the Kandinsky print ‘Orange, 1923’ which informed the shapes and compositions of the brooches, while the choice of colour came from one of my favourite Kandinsky quotes: “orange is red brought nearer to humanity by yellow.” One brooch is a red-orange, and the other is a yellow-orange - so together they balance each other. Both brooches have a ‘true’ orange shade of enamel on the reverse – a flash of this colour can only be seen by the wearer and is quite literally bringing the colours nearer to humanity when the brooches are worn.

The necklace is inspired by the colour green - green is one of the most abundant colours in the world and often associated with nature. The shapes within the necklace could be seen as leaves, but if you look closer there is an eye at the centre of the composition which is a reference to the 'green eyed monster' - a phrase first used in Shakespeare's Othello to describe jealousy...

The candlestick holders are inspired by the colour purple. Historically, purple is a royal colour, which is why the candlestick holders are in the form of a King and Queen. The silver element not only holds the candles in place, but also acts as their tiny crowns. Purple also has a more gruesome side to its past, as a particular shade of purple pigment was made by collecting and processing thousands of sea snails - this brutal end to the sea snails lives created a stunning shade of purple and inspired my use of enamel. Another tribute to the snails' role in purple's history is found on the purpleheart wooden base - when you lift the enamelled section a wee carved snail is revealed hiding underneath.
