A Day in the Life of William Gillies

1 June 2023

Photographs by Jessie Ann Matthew, December 1972

Artist and photographer Jessie Ann Matthew visited William Gillies (1898-1973) in December 1972 when she was just at the beginning of her creative practice and education.  Jessie says that she approached Gillies as a subject and he generously let her into his house and studio in Temple, in the Scottish Borders.  We are delighted to share some of these images, which gives further insight into the artist’s home and studio and we think that Jessie has captured the warmth and humour of William Gillies on a cold day in December 1972.  The artist would die a few months later on the 15th April 1973.  You can now view some of the images taken by Jessie below.

William Gillies The Visionary Painter can be viewed in The Gallery until the 24 June. You can also view the exhibition online here or purchase the accompanying publication here.
