Going Green | The Scottish Gallery Garden 2022

22 December 2021

The Scottish Gallery is very lucky to have a garden. It makes for another room for art and also offers a different view of the historic New Town.

We have been working with artist and horticulturist Alex Knubley for several years, she has helped create a wild and informal garden that is always evolving. We are now turning our attention to the much more challenging basement area facing Dundas Street.

We have represented the sculptor Andrea Geile for over 14 years – she works predominately with Corten steel and her work has become synonymous with our garden. The contrast of the rusted metal works really well with the natural environment.

The garden combines art and planting and provides a joyful green space for visitors to The Gallery. It has a sloping, triangular shape as it forms part of the corner of Dundas Street and Northumberland Street and would have originally been designed as a vegetable garden.

At our front door on Dundas Street we added two planters, and we don’t know why we hadn’t done this before! It adds a welcoming, green touch to the urban environment.

Our building forms part of a traditional New Town tenement which includes a basement area to the front – we are now working closely with Alex to create a stepped garden area to add another important green space for all of us to enjoy. We will then be inviting Andrea Geile to enhance the space with sculpture.

We look forward to sharing images of the challenges we face as we transform another of our spaces into a green haven!
