Joan Eardley (1921-1963)

As part of Women’s History Month, we celebrate Joan Eardley (1921–1963), whom The Scottish Gallery first exhibited in 1955. For over seventy years we have championed her work, from her memorial exhibition in 1964 to her Centenary in 2021. We believe in recognising and investing in exceptional talent, helping artists build both a livelihood and a lasting reputation.

Joan Eardley | The Macaulay Children, 1957 | From our Archive

The Macaulay Children shown above, is the only known commissioned painting the artist undertook. It is also her only portrait of children outside Townhead in Glasgow. In contrast to the tenement streets and visible hardship that define so much of her practice, here we encounter something entirely different: five middle-class children from Edinburgh, observed within the security and structure of their own world.

The sitters are the children of William Macaulay, senior partner of The Scottish Gallery, and his wife, daughter of Sir David Russell of Markinch and Iona. Neither artist nor children were enthusiastic about the sittings, yet the outcome is a testament to Eardley’s respect for Macaulay, who was her steady guide through the commercial art world. After many preparatory sketches, some later confused with her Townhead subjects, she created a work alive with mischief, individuality and psychological presence.

The Scottish Gallery has a longstanding and direct connection to Joan Eardley’s legacy. Since first exhibiting her work in 1955, we have supported her reputation through scholarship, exhibitions and careful placement in major private and public collections. Our archive and decades of experience ensure her paintings and works on paper are presented with context, care and authority, consistently achieving strong results.

As the primary champion of an artist’s work, a gallery plays a vital role in sustaining reputation and placing works thoughtfully with committed collectors. Through dedicated exhibitions and our respected Modern Masters series, we continue to present Eardley’s work in this spirit.

We are always seeking consignments of Joan Eardley’s work. Selling through The Scottish Gallery offers a discreet and considered alternative to auction, avoiding the uncertainty of a single sale day. Each work is carefully positioned and introduced directly to established collectors.

Our approach is informed, measured and competitively structured. Please contact The Gallery for a confidential and informal conversation.  Christina Jansen, Managing Director

Joan Eardley | Catterline

In Catterline on the north-east coast of Scotland, Joan Eardley developed one of the most powerful landscape practices in twentieth-century British art. Working from her cottage studio, she immersed herself in the elemental force of sea, field and sky, painting directly in shifting weather and often against gathering storms. Her canvases from this period are charged with luminous greens, turbulent blues and a physical urgency of mark that reflect both the vitality of the land and the intensity with which she worked, particularly in the final years of her life.

Joan Eardley | A Field by the Sea No. 1, 1962 | Price on Application

Painted in late summer 1962, A Field by the Sea No. 1 captures a moment of transition in Eardley’s beloved Catterline, where harvest fields meet the first force of autumn weather. Luminous greens and vibrant turquoise surge across the canvas with a raw intensity that speaks to both the vitality of the land and the urgency of the artist’s hand. Created in the final year of her life, as illness advanced but creativity burned fiercely, the painting carries a remarkable clarity and conviction. Acquired from Roland, Browse & Delbanco, it was later included in the Arts Council Memorial Exhibition of 1964, honouring Eardley’s extraordinary contribution to twentieth-century art.
