The Danish-born Australian potter Kirsten Coelho’s 15 new works, made earlier this year specifically for her solo exhibition in Edinburgh, are pitch perfect.

For Coelho, inserting cobalt glazed objects into assemblages of satin white glazed porcelain forms in the two works titled Plunge and Pillar, ‘felt like dropping indigo ink into a glass of milk.’ In The Odyssey, Homer uses the term ‘wine-dark’ to describe rough, stormy seas. Coelho’s porcelain compositions however evoke tranquil, untroubled waters.
