William Crosbie’s - Womb from Womb
We are delighted to announce that the Scottish National Portrait Gallery has acquired Womb from Womb by William Crosbie (1915-1999).
It is one of a few ambitious, surrealist influenced works by Crosbie made during the Second World War. In a space where shadows create repeated shapes, patterns proliferate and organic forms and primary colour, (albeit in a subfusc interior) add to the sense of unease, the self-portrait, posed in discomfort.
The enigmatic title may refer obliquely to a difficult childhood or the creative process which is considered with a fierce intensity.
This monumental work featured in A New Era at the SNGMA in 2018 and will be on display at the SNPG in The Modern Portrait from the 26th March 2019.
William Crosbie will be one of our historical exhibitions to feature in 2020.
