Edinburgh School 1949 - 1950 | Artists Identified21 Feb 2019
We opened our 2019 programme with The Edinburgh School and Wider Circle, which refers to a group of artists associated with Edinburgh College of Art after the First World War.
For the cover of the catalogue, we used a panoramic photograph from our archives showing a class photo from Edinburgh College of Art; 1949 - 1950. As an unexpected consequence we welcomed many past ECA students and family members who visited The Gallery throughout the month of January to see the original photo and share their stories with us.
We were slowly adding to the names we had previously known when Pauline Kerr and Ian Scott visited us and delighted us with a handwritten overlay identifying every artist from 1949.
We can't thank Ian and Pauline enough for this important addition to our archives. This means that both The Gallery and other art historians may be able to see an image of an artist for the first time. For example, we used a close up of Edward Gage from our original image in our publication to bring the artist back to life. Photographs are a vital way of connecting with the artist and their work. If you have any information about any of our artists, past and present we would love to take a look and take a copy for our records. Together we can ensure valuable details and information is kept for future generations. Please contact The Gallery here if you have any information that you would like to share with us.
