Philip Eglin has created several miniature examples of his iconic figurative works specially for The Gallery and we are delighted and relieved his final firing was a success! They have travelled all the way from his studio in Wales and are now finally on display within The Gallery.
‘Through this series of small scale figurative works, reference is made to the painted female nudes of Lucas Cranach and early 18th c. Staffordshire pottery figures. The simple lead based transparent glaze, coloured with the oxides of iron, manganese and copper, firmly root these pieces within an English slipware tradition. The figures are constructed hollow from soft sheets of clay, wrapped and pushed out from the inside with a deliberate economy of touch with the only details pressed from moulds, being those employed to offer a semblance of hands and hair.’
