Most probably a child’s chair with their initials on the Cresting Rail – ‘I D’, along with the classic scroll design (symbolic of eternity). It is not uncommon to find examples of chairs made in pin from rural Aberdeenshire and dating from the 17th Century, though surviving examples are still extremely rare in the scheme of things,
“Caqueteuse” is a French word, meaning “gossip”, so essentially a gossip chair! It has become synonymous with early Scottish chairs, displaying a narrow carvel back, with a wide flaring seat at the front and curved ‘pincer’ arms.
