William Daniell was an English landscape and marine painter, and printmaker, best known for Oriental Scenery, made in India in collaboration with his uncle Thomas Daniell. They travelled extensively together, taking themselves from Calcutta and Delhi to the Himalayas and war-torn Southern India documenting hill-forts, temples and new architecture in 144 coloured aquatints. In 1813 Daniell decided to undertake what was to be his greatest artistic work, A Voyage Round Great Britain and in 1822 he became a Royal Academician. His work is held in national collections in the UK, India and the USA.
