Mary Maclean trained at The Glasgow School of Art, The Rijkesakademie in Amsterdam and completed her MA in the painting department of the Royal College of Art in London in 1988. Her work explored the representations of the experience of place, and though in her early career she used her training to work as a painter, it was as a photographer that she became best known. Alongside her working career as an artist, Mary was widely respected and sought-after as a regular visiting lecturer in art schools and colleges across the country, eventually becoming senior lecturer for the Royal Academy Schools.
