Ellen Malcolm was a sensitive and versatile painter, who exhibited a wide range of subjects from still life and portraiture through landscape and domestic scenes. Malcolm was born in Grangemouth in 1923 and was educated at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen under D. M. Sutherland and Robert Sivell. Ellen Malcolm paints in a female lineage which includes Gwen John, Winifred Nicholson and her near contemporary Joan Eardley, treating her subject with an honesty which prefers simplicity and delicacy to an analysis of form and interior space.
