Stephanie explains, that the familiar subjects are re-examined through older eyes. Some reflective, some wistful, some evoke serenity and to me some bring back joyous memories of childhood holidays. The city works are of Edinburgh in different seasons and thus in different lights. Many subjects are nostalgic whilst some are new to me. From the pale light of winter with silhouetted bare trees to the light and shade of a beautiful summers day and the bright bursts of green and vibrant colour that summer brings through to the warm comforting glow of an autumnal day. In the East Lothian paintings I consider the importance of space and the calmness and serenity I feel by the shore looking out to sea. Having been brought up in North Berwick the certainty of the sea gives me time to reflect and look back to nature in the chaotic and busy time we live in. The warm character and joyous colours of the ‘East Neuk’ harbour paintings conjure happy memories of childhood holidays and I hope show the unspoilt charm of this part of Scotland.
