The shaping of this oak panel is created with hand-directed tools until the undulations are finally sanded smooth and white wax applied. Projected grass shadows rippling over the undulations are traced onto the white background and chisel carved. The grass shapes move in unison over the shaped surface. The wood grain is finally enhanced with black wax, showing agitated watery movement through the panel middle area. Choosing a particular grained board to carve is integral to the result. It’s dependent upon the lie of the annular growth-rings. The oak has been locally sourced in the Scottish Borders.
