S.J. and Margaret Peploe’s son Willy, was born in Royan in the Charente-Inférieure on 29 August 1910 during this period of residence in France. Willy and then Denis, born four years later, became regular subjects for drawing and occasional painting: playing, reading or at rest. These works are among the most personal images he produced, conveying the quiet affection of a father observing the everyday life of his family.
About S.J. Peploe
Born in 1871 in Edinburgh, S.J. Peploe is the senior of the four artists known as The Scottish Colourists. He lived in Paris from 1910 until 1912, where his work changed radically from paintings reminiscent of Manet and Sargent to brilliant Fauvist works which placed him in the vanguard of British Modernism.
