Ride for MND | Tommy’s Charity Cycle

13 February 2020

Gallery Director Tommy Zyw is cycling the North Coast 500 for Motor Neurone Disease.

In August this year I am are cycling 500 miles with my twin brother Davy and friends to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). We had hoped to complete the ride in May, but had to postpone due to the pandemic. We have just rescheduled for August this year and are grateful for the extra few months of training!

Davy was diagnosed with the disease in April 2018. MND degenerates your muscles, stripping you of control and mobility, trapping your active mind in a paralysed body. There are a lot of unknowns about the condition, but we do know that 50% of the people diagnosed with MND die within 2 years. There is currently no cure. Please click here to read Davy’s story.

Every pound we raise, every pedal we push will go towards finding a cure and raising awareness for people living with this disease. People like me.

The 500 mile route circumnavigates Scotland’s remote northern coastline and climbs the equivalent height of Mount Everest. We plan to complete in four days.

The route starts in Inverness, weaves towards the west coast to Applecross and then northwards, up and down towards Torridon, Ullapool and Durness. Heading east along the north coast we will venture to some of the most northerly coastal points in Scotland, passing by Caithness before heading south through Dingwall and finally back to Inverness. We are expecting horizontal rain, high winds, punctures, tears and lots of bananas over the course of the route! This would be difficult for anyone, let alone someone with MND.

We are fundraising for My Name’5 Doddie, a charity started by Scottish Rugby Legend Doddie Weir who is diagnosed with the condition. His charity is doing amazing work, promoting awareness, funding research for a cure with the MND Association & MND Scotland; including the new MND-SMART drug trails. His charity is helping people like Davy, and their families to live their best lives. Thank you for reading.

The Scottish Gallery has supported MND Scotland for the past two years. We appreciate any donation you wish to make and you can DONATE HERE.
