Tommy Zyw visited Ross Ryan at Crinan ahead of his exhibition in May this year. The studio, perched above Crinan Harbour enjoys spectacular views looking southwest across the sound towards Jura. Balancing the life of a sailor and painter, Ross has spent the last year been predominantly painting outside, often on deck of his 1947 wooden fishing boat The Sgrabh. For his forthcoming exhibition he has chased heavy weather across the islands of Scotland, painting seascapes full of the energy and drama of Atlantic storms.

Included in the exhibition will be a group of works referencing Ross’ time as a HMS Coastguard, a series of nocturne studies painted from the Clyde as well as two major paintings of Stevenson lighthouses, painted on location. The exhibition, Batten Down the Hatches, will run form 29th April to the 30th May 2020. Watch Ross discuss the wild story behind one Tiree seascape below.
