There are currently three exhibitions on throughout the UK focusing on The Scottish Colourists. These are at Abbot Hall in Kendal, Cumbria, The Lightbox in Woking, Surrey and at The Perth Museum and Art Gallery in Fife.
Colour and Light | Abbot Hall | on until 1 February 2020
This exhibition presents the art and influence of the Scottish Colourists centred on masterpieces from the renowned Fleming Collection, the finest collection of Scottish art outside public museums and institutions.
You’ll find around 50 works gathered across 3 of the galleries. These include the disctinctive works by the Scottish Colourists, S.J.Peploe, J.D. Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter, and F.C.B. Cadell, which have been at the heart of the Fleming Collection since its inception in1968.
The display at Abbot Hall in Kendal features Hunter’s masterpiece Peonies in a Chinese Vase, which is one of the Fleming Collection’s earliest acquisitions. Other key paintings include Peploe’s Luxembourg Gardens, Fergusson’s Blue Nude and Cadell’s The Feathered Hat.
Burning Bright: The Scottish Colourists | The Lightbox in Woking, Surrey | on until 12 January 2020
This new exhibition at The Lightbox in Woking brings together the significant works of Scottish Colourists S.J. Peploe (1871 – 1935), J.D. Fergusson (1874 – 1961), G.L. Hunter (1877 – 1931) and F.C.B. Cadell (1883 – 1935). The works include paintings and drawings which represent all of the favoured subjects of the artists such as still-life, interior scenes, landscapes and portraiture.
The Scottish Colourists were among the first British artists to get to grips with the radical new trends in painting which emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century. They loved to travel and this will be reflected in their depiction of bright and beautiful European destinations.

The works of Derain, Peploe and Matisse will go on display in a new exhibition celebrating the Scottish Colourist, JD Fergusson this winter.
As one of the most significant Scottish artists of the modern age, John Duncan Fergusson was an important and influential artist in Britain in the first half of the 20th century, and was a leading figure among the ‘Scottish Colourists’.
Running from 16 November 2019 to 29 February 2020, Fergusson will include some of his best-known works including ‘The Grey Hat’, ‘Le Manteau Chinois’ and ‘At My Studio Window’.
The exhibition will also feature important works by his contemporaries and founders of the Fauve movement, Matisse and Derain; The Pool of London by André Derain from Tate, On the French Coast by Samuel John Peploe from National Galleries Scotland and Portrait of Greta Moll by Henri Matisse from the National Gallery in London.
These magnificent works of art are to be exhibited for the first time in Perth and offer fans the rare opportunity to view these iconic works outside London.
Fergusson showcases works spanning the duration of JD Fergusson’s long and productive career and will feature more than 40 paintings, drawings, watercolours. It will be the largest dedicated exhibition of works by Fergusson to take place in Perth.
