Just moments from North Berwick train station, Clare Blatherwick’s beautifully renovated design studio provides the perfect setting for this unique collaboration. Clare is one of Scotland’s leading jewellery experts, designer-makers and advisors, known for her deep knowledge of antique and contemporary jewellery and her highly personal approach to working with clients. Her studio on Station Hill has quickly become a destination for jewellery lovers visiting East Lothian.
Bringing together two remarkable Scottish artists, the exhibition will celebrate the work of Dr Malcolm Appleby MBE, FRSE and Pascale Rentsch, RSW

In his 80th birthday year, Malcolm Appleby MBE remains one of Britain’s most distinguished silversmiths, engravers, jewellers and designers. Renowned for his extraordinary craftsmanship and lifelong commitment to making, Malcolm’s work sits naturally alongside Clare Blatherwick’s passion for exceptional design and beautifully crafted objects. The exhibition offers an exciting preview of Malcolm’s milestone birthday celebrations, ahead of his major exhibition with The Scottish Gallery in September 2026.
Alongside Malcolm’s work, visitors will discover a new collection of paintings by Pascale Rentsch, created especially for this exhibition. Living and working in East Lothian, Pascale has drawn inspiration from the landscapes surrounding North Berwick, capturing the light, colour and changing seasons that define this remarkable coastline.

Pascale Rentsch, RSW
It’s a privilege to be an artist. My eyes find beauty every day, whether in the woodland around me carpeted with bluebells or in the glow of the rapeseed fields across the East Lothian landscape. Light reveals itself in the most unexpected places, encouraging me to look beyond the obvious. It enriches me and fills my heart with hope and joy. I’m not striving to copy nature when I paint. Curiosity is at the heart of my practice and continually drives me to explore and experiment. Without curiosity, there is no discovery.
If I can express something of nature’s essence, what it feels like, its spirit and energy, then I feel I have captured something both untouchable and inexplicable. For me, that is the magic of life. Painting through the seasons is a way of life. Each one reminds me to keep moving, adapting and flowing with the rhythms of nature, always with an open heart. It is a real honour to have been invited by The Scottish Gallery to collaborate with the brilliant Clare Blatherwick at her North Berwick design studio. Taking place during Fringe by the Sea, I’m delighted and excited to be part of this special project.
Pascale’s participation also offers an early glimpse of her forthcoming solo exhibition with The Scottish Gallery in May 2027.

Dr Malcolm Appleby MBE, FRSE
I’m a big fan of The Scottish Gallery and Clare Blatherwick for their unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, originality and excellence. To be part of this collaboration in North Berwick, during the vibrant atmosphere of Fringe by the Sea and in my 80th birthday year, is a pleasure.
The Scottish Gallery will celebrate Malcolm Appleby’s 80th year with a special Room of Dreams exhibition in The Gallery in September 2026.

We look forward to welcoming visitors to Clare Blatherwick Design Studio throughout Fringe by the Sea for this special celebration of Scottish art, jewellery and craftsmanship.
