Junior Registrar
24-month fixed-term contract | Full-time
The Scottish Gallery is one of the UK’s leading independent galleries for modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1842 and based in Edinburgh’s New Town, we deliver a year-round programme of exhibitions, publications and events, engaging collectors and audiences both in person and online.
We are seeking a Junior Registrar to join our small, collaborative team. This is a hands-on role offering experience across registration, exhibitions and the day-to-day life of a working gallery. You will work closely with the Senior Registrar and Directors, supporting the input, care, presentation and movement of artworks, while also playing an important role front-of-house. This position would suit someone at an early stage in their career who is highly organised, attentive to detail and keen to develop practical experience in a commercial gallery setting.
Core Role:
- Register works of art and applied art on our FileMaker Pro database
- Upload works of art and applied art to our website (WordPress)
- Work directly with the public delivering impeccable customer service to clients and artists
- Work with the Gallery team to help support and deliver our monthly exhibition programme
- Assist with the hanging, packing and display of artworks to be presented to the public, clients and artists
- Create invoices using our FileMaker Pro database
- Square POS system – upload publications and books directly onto the system and take sales in person at till points, or by payment link digitally/over the phone
- Assist with the formatting of pricelists and associated literature within The Gallery
- Assist with the creation of blogs/news stories on our website (WordPress)
- Support and assist with the monthly mailing of physical invitations and publications
- Assist with online orders -completing and liaising with customers in a timely manner
- Lifting, moving, storage, distribution and maintenance of works of art
- Packing and wrapping paintings, prints and objects to Gallery standard
- Assisting with photography sessions
Person Specification
Essential:
- Proficient at inputting data into a database or website
- Strong general IT skills
- Comfortable engaging with clients and visitors
- Clear, confident and professional communication skills
- Holds a History of Art degree or similar
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
- Able to work independently and as part of a small team
- Confident in your abilities, self-motivated, hard-working and enjoy a challenge
- Able to manage competing priorities and work to deadlines
- Excellent time-keeping skills
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a gallery or similar environment
- Experience of communications activity/social media
- Experience/understanding of working at events
- A genuine interest in modern and contemporary art
- An understanding of copyright and data protection
- Driving Licence

Core Hours: Five-day week with one additional Saturday per calendar month (time off in lieu). Core hours are 9.30am – 6pm with some additional hours for associated events as required (time off in lieu).
Location: The Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6HZ (please note this is not a hybrid or remote working position).
Closing Date: 5pm Friday 10th April. Interviews will be held the week commencing 20th April at The Scottish Gallery.
