Ross Ryan | Batten Down the Hatches
Ross Ryan presents his solo exhibition Batten Down the Hatches this May. In his own words:
This new collection of paintings is from two years of chasing gales, sailing to offshore lighthouses and discovering the people and their islands that found my messages in bottles. As the world has also temporarily battened down the hatches I hope this exhibition is a reminder of the beautiful seascapes of the West Coast that await for us.

Sir William Gillies | My Border Landscape
William Gillies enjoyed seven solo exhibitions with The Scottish Gallery during his lifetime, the reputation of artist and Gallery, intimately intertwined. We are delighted to present this exhibition of 15 works focusing on his beloved Borders landscape. William Gillies lived a simple life in his cottage at Temple. Not ascetic nor cut off: visitors were plied with potent home made wines and would take away a pot of jam, and perhaps a watercolour. His studio had a wide picture window which provided the subject for many paintings looking out, particularly in the winter. But it was outside that he was in his element, driving out in his Ford Grenada to revisit a promising spot on the Gala Water or along the escarpment of the Moorfoot Hills, seeing something that others would miss: the straight course of an ancient dyke, a farmhouse half-hidden in a copse of pines, the water of a burn quickening into a ravine. His dark skies and high horizons, subtle washes and perspicacious line make us see the landscape through his eyes and as we pause we can be grateful.

Wendy Ramshaw | Wendy's World
Wendy’s WorldThis May, The Scottish Gallery has created an online tribute to one of the world’s finest contemporary jewellers – Wendy Ramshaw, CBE, RDI (1939-2018). The Scottish Gallery was honoured and grateful to have been a platform for her many projects and ideas. We have delved into our archives as well as the family archive to share some of Wendy’s personal letters and notes, which reveal fascinating personal and technical insights into some of her major projects such as Picasso’s Ladies, Prospero’s Table and Journey Through Glass. Wendy Ramshaw was a champion of modern jewellery and her work is represented in over 70 public collections worldwide.
