A Shared Language

5 May 2022 - 28 May 2022

This May, The Scottish Gallery presents A Shared Language, showcasing new work from two respected designer makers: silversmith Ane Christensen and jeweller Daphne Krinos.

Following a collaboration that began in 2019, this exhibition offers an insight into their respective crafts and the way new ideas form and develop through creative dialogue. Though working in different disciplines and on different scales, Ane and Daphne share a common language in their work, both inspired by balance and the positive and negative shapes found in architecture.

Born: 1972
Place of Birth: Copenhagen, Demark

Ane Christensen grew up in Copenhagen and moved to London in 1993 to study HND Jewellery Design at Sir John Cass Faculty of Art. She went on to work as an assistant for two designer silversmiths and completed her MA in Metalwork & Silversmithing at the Royal College of Art, before establishing her practise in 1999. Ane lives and works in East London.

‘All my work begins with the simple geometry of bowl forms and flat sheet. I often include metal wire, used like three-dimensional line drawing in space. Applying traditional techniques such as hand piercing, drilling and soldering, I enjoy working in a variety of metals combining them in an exploration of colour and texture.’

Public Collections include: Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums; Birmingham Museum Collection; Crafts Council Silver Collection, London; FitzWilliam Museum Collection, Cambridge; Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, London; Koldinghus Museum, Kolding, Denmark; Liverpool Museum Collection; Museum for Decorative Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark; Victoria & Albert Museum

Born: 1955

Fine jeweller Daphne Krinos is known for her bold and architectural designs. Creating unique, one-off pieces entirely by hand, she works with recycled gold, black oxidised silver and precious gemstones.

Originally from Greece, Daphne established her studio in London in the early 1980s. Her distinctive work has captured a broad and loyal following, from collectors to artists, architects and lawyers. Daphne’s pieces can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Goldsmiths Company and the Crafts Council amongst others.

Daphne’s sculptural jewellery is instantly recognisable, defined by bold use of colour, form, shape and texture. Graphic lines of black oxidised silver offset vivid translucent stones, dramatic articulated or layered compositions combine angular, geometric forms in a mixture of metals. Daphne’s playful character shines throughout the work; every piece displaying fresh ideas and exploring processes.

Daphne’s distinctive work has earned her a global profile, her work being bought by international collectors throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Japan.
