Place of Birth: Edinburgh

Hugh Buchanan was born in Edinburgh in 1958. The city instilled in him a lifelong love of architecture, which he developed as a student at Edinburgh College of Art.

‘Hugh Buchanan’s manipulation of light through water and colour takes the viewer back into the dreams and visions of that extraordinary group of architects, produced by 18th and 19th century Edinburgh, as they cast their eyes across the undeveloped ridge and gently falling northward slopes that were to become the New Towns of Edinburgh.’
– Adam Wilkinson

Buchanan’s paintings are held in numerous public and private collections including: Victoria and Albert Museum, Edinburgh City Art Centre, University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Flemings Bank, Deutsche Bank, National Trust for Scotland and the English National Trust.

Hugh Buchanan was the subject of a solo exhibition in December 2019 called Capital City. To purchase a copy of the accompanying catalogue please click here.
