The City, the Shore and the Harbour

5 January 2019 - 26 January 2019

We are delighted to welcome back Stephanie Dees for her 7th solo show at The Scottish Gallery. The exhibition is divided into three subject matters, The City, the Shore and the Harbour.

Stephanie explains, that the familiar subjects are re-examined through older eyes. Some reflective, some wistful, some evoke serenity and to me some bring back joyous memories of childhood holidays. The city works are of Edinburgh in different seasons and thus in different lights. Many subjects are nostalgic whilst some are new to me. From the pale light of winter with silhouetted bare trees to the light and shade of a beautiful summers day and the bright bursts of green and vibrant colour that summer brings through to the warm comforting glow of an autumnal day. In the East Lothian paintings I consider the importance of space and the calmness and serenity I feel by the shore looking out to sea. Having been brought up in North Berwick the certainty of the sea gives me time to reflect and look back to nature in the chaotic and busy time we live in. The warm character and joyous colours of the ‘East Neuk’ harbour paintings conjure happy memories of childhood holidays and I hope show the unspoilt charm of this part of Scotland.

Stephanie Dees will be in The Gallery between 11am – 12noon on Saturday 19 January. This is a chance to meet the artist and discuss her current exhibition, The City, the Shore and the Harbour. This is a free but ticketed informal event, so please click here to book your place.

Born: 1974

Stephanie Dees was born in Northumberland, and raised in North Berwick before undertaking her formal art training at Edinburgh College of Art. She graduated with BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting and an MFA in Painting, and she has been exhibiting at The Scottish Gallery since 1997.

Stephanie’s work portrays the transformative effect of light and season on both rural and urban landscapes. She uses mixed media, acrylic, watercolour, pencil, oil bar and oil pastel with quick expressive marks to convey the patterns and rhythms of Edinburgh’s New Town architecture. She sometimes uses pure watercolour to help her portray the translucency of a pale winter sky, or the reflective poignancy of a summer evening looking out to sea, when her subject shifts to the countryside in East Lothian or the Harbour Towns of the East Neuk.
