Frances Macdonald is one of Scotland’s most accomplished contemporary landscape painters, celebrated for her vibrant, expressive depictions of the western coastline and islands of Scotland. Working primarily in oil with a palette knife, Macdonald creates richly textured paintings that capture the energy, movement and changing atmosphere of sea, sky and shore. Her work is deeply rooted in direct experience of place, returning again and again to the Hebrides, Iona, Kintyre, Argyll and the Atlantic coastlines that continue to inspire her practice.
When beginning work towards a new exhibition, Macdonald frequently travels to Iona, drawn by the island’s extraordinary light, weather and ever-changing landscape. Like the Scottish Colourists before her, particularly Peploe and Cadell, she is fascinated by the dramatic contrast between dark volcanic rock, brilliant white sands and luminous turquoise water. These elemental relationships form the foundation of her paintings, while her vigorous palette knife technique introduces a dynamic physicality that animates every surface. Rocks fracture into almost cubist formations, skies sweep across the canvas and the sea shifts constantly between calm luminosity and storm-driven force.
Macdonald’s paintings are distinguished by their instinctive balance between observation and emotional response. Rather than describing landscape literally, she seeks to convey the sensation of standing within it: the salt air, the shifting tides, the brilliance of reflected light and the physical force of weather moving across the coast. Guy Peploe has described her paintings as works where “sky, sea, rock are Macdonald’s alliteration”, capturing both the poetry and physicality of Scotland’s western seaboard.
While the Hebrides remain central to her practice, Macdonald also draws inspiration from further travels, including the Galápagos Islands, the South of France and Brittany. In 2013 she was awarded the prestigious Charles Rennie Mackintosh Residency at Collioure, deepening her engagement with Mediterranean light and colour. Across all of these locations, her work retains a distinctive immediacy and recognisable visual language, characterised by luminous colour, bold mark-making and an enduring fascination with the meeting point between land and sea.
A regular exhibitor with The Scottish Gallery, Macdonald has established a devoted following for her evocative and instantly recognisable landscapes. Her paintings are held in numerous private collections throughout the UK and internationally, and she has exhibited widely with the Royal Glasgow Institute, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and Visual Arts Scotland.
Frances Macdonald will be the subject of a major solo exhibition at The Scottish Gallery in February 2027.
