Born: 1987
Place of Birth: South Korea

Jaejun Lee is a Korean ceramicist based in the UK, specializing in porcelain crafted through throwing techniques. His work seeks to harmonise functionality and beauty, with the aim of enriching and enhancing people’s everyday lives. Jaejun pays close attention to subtle, often overlooked details, believing that the small differences in each step of his process can bring immense satisfaction to those who interact with his creations. The surfaces of his ceramics reflect a deep consideration for materials, where the sense of touch is valued as much as visual appeal, a true testament to his dedication to craftsmanship.

For Jaejun, technical skill is essential, but not as a means to merely showcase technique. Instead, it reflects an attitude, a thoughtful approach to both creating and living with his work. Through this, he hopes to share a sense of mindfulness and connection with others.

Since completing both his BFA and MFA at Seoul National University, Lee has exhibited widely across Korea and Europe. In 2018, he moved to the UK on an Arts Council England Exceptional Talent visa. His work has received growing recognition internationally, including winning Best Ceramics at the Bovey Tracey Craft Festival and Best Selected Maker at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. In 2022, he was also a finalist for the prestigious BKV Prize in Germany.

Currently, Jaejun is immersed in a period of exploration with celadon glaze, focusing on reduction firing. His goal is to capture the breathing, dynamic essence of the glaze in its most dramatic and fleeting moment. As the artist reflects, “I hope my work can bring quiet joy into daily life, through the time and care held within each piece.”
