Naoko Shibuya (b.1975) was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She studied Painting at Tama Art University before moving to Britain to continue her studies at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2001 with a Master’s degree in Painting and Drawing. She now divides her time between studios in Edinburgh and Tokyo, balancing the visual traditions and cultural influences of both Japan and Scotland within her distinctive contemporary practice.
Shibuya’s paintings are inspired by the intimate observation of the natural world. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies become the starting point for richly imagined compositions that explore memory, time and the cyclical rhythms of nature. Working from sketches gathered in gardens, bamboo groves and botanical collections, she transforms observed reality into luminous, dreamlike spaces filled with atmosphere and stillness. Her paintings are less descriptive than immersive, inviting the viewer into contemplative interior worlds where light, scent, sound and emotion seem suspended in time.
The artist draws particular inspiration from the fleeting transformations found in the changing seasons. Blossoming flowers, falling leaves and shifting plant forms become symbols of renewal, fragility and resilience. Her recurring Tsubaki (Camellia) series reflects both childhood memories and the landscape surrounding her ancestral home in Tokyo, while works inspired by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh reveal her enduring connection to Scotland.
Shibuya’s practice acknowledges the deep traditions of Japanese art and design, from ikebana and nihon shishu embroidery to the decorative refinement of Edo-period painting, while also connecting with the aesthetics of Art Nouveau and the legacy of artists such as Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. These influences are absorbed into a highly personal visual language distinguished by intricate pattern, flattened space, circular motifs and carefully orchestrated colour harmonies. Floating forms, rippling concentric circles and golden emblems recur throughout her compositions, suggesting unseen energies, continuity and the “everlasting flow of life.”
Naoko Shibuya has exhibited regularly with The Scottish Gallery and in 2024 presented Sanctuary, a major body of new paintings inspired by gardens and landscapes across Japan and Scotland.
‘I draw ideas from the form of trees, plants, flowers and small birds, not only for visual effects, but also to express the strength and robustness of nature. Plants and flowers show dramatic changes in such a short time when they are in bloom and also when they wither. Each figure in each moment represents the turn of time, which seems to go far towards expressing an invisible stream and the phenomenon of fleeting moments in nature.
