A Sicilian Story03 Feb 2022 - 26 Feb 2022
This show highlights a particular strand of the artist's work over a decade or so from 1956. Its binding thread is Sicily and falls into three sections.
Firstly, townscapes and landscapes from a stimulating six month period when David McClure lived near Palermo in 1956/7. The second from the early 1960s, features enigmatic figure compositions mixing Kings, Bishops, Madonnas and Infantas drawn in part from experiences of Sicily, elsewhere Italy and from Spain. The third group soon grows from these but takes on a darker character with the inclusion of stigmatised Bishops or Priests mixing with scenes of Mafia-related bloodshed and violence, the catalyst for this assumed to be the often graphic media coverage of The First Mafia War.
