2021 marks the 75th year of Malcolm Appleby, the world class master engraver, silversmith and jeweller. Malcolm has brought together several silversmiths, artists and fellow collaborators to mark his birthday year and celebrate the joy of creativity. Malcolm Appleby & Friends includes work from: Ndidi Ekubia, Miriam Hanid, Dorothy Hogg, Michael Lloyd, Angus McFadyen, Theresa Nguyen, Jane Short, Max Warren and Yusuke Yamamoto.
In part 3 we will be celebrating the work of Dorothy Hogg, Jane Short and Max Warren.
Dorothy Hogg
Dorothy Hogg studied at Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art and was course leader of Jewellery & Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art from 1985 until 2007.
In 2001 she was awarded an MBE for services to jewellery and silversmithing. In 2005 she won the Brilliantly Brimingham Jewellery Award which is awarded to the jeweller who has made the greatest contribution to the world of designer-maker jewellery.
Jane Short
Jane Short has had training both as a jeweller and silversmith, graduating from the Royal college of Art in 1979. She has been enamelling since 1974, using the traditional techniques of champlevé and basse-taille. These individually designed pieces may be richly coloured or make more subtle use of the wide range of colours available to the enameller, and are a painterly and evocative exploration of colour and imagery. Jane also collaborates with other silversmiths and makers to interpret their colour designs into enamel and received an MBE for services to the Craft of Enamelling in 2016.

Max Warren
Driven by a deep interest in materiality and craft, Max Warren makes works from metal. His practice is influenced by shifting social conditions and the effects of digital culture, employing material qualities and traditional processes to reflect the fluidity of contemporary experience. Warren trained as a silversmith at the Royal College of Art, the University of Brighton and Bishopsland Educational Trust. He exhibits widely in the UK and internationally, having shown at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Museum of Scotland, Somerset House, Vitsœ Showrooms Munich and the Design Museum in Ghent. Warren is a Senior Lecturer at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London) and a Tutor/Researcher at the Royal College of Art. He has taught in Brazil, South Korea and Germany, and undertaken funded residencies at Cove Park in Scotland and at Seoul National University.
Cove ParkWarren employs ancient craft techniques such as hand engraving and forging to create contemporary objects in metal. The works are informed by digital culture but created entirely with traditional hand-making processes.
