            Christopher Brown

            Born: 1953
            Place of Birth: London

Christopher Brown is a British illustrator and printmaker, born in London and trained at the Royal College of Art. While studying Illustration, he was taught by Sheila Robinson, who introduced him to Edward Bawden. Brown would go on to assist Bawden, whose encouragement helped him develop a lasting interest in printmaking and linocut in particular.

Christopher has worked extensively across publishing, design and the arts, with his linocuts and illustrations appearing in numerous books and exhibitions. His work has been shown at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

In 2012, Merrell published An Alphabet of London, a richly illustrated celebration of the capital in Brown’s bold, graphic style. He is currently working on a companion volume, An Alphabet of England.

In 2024, Brown curated the exhibition Edward Bawden and Me at The Higgins Bedford. For this project, he invited 30 contemporary artists, designers and illustrators to respond to the Bawden archive, highlighting the enduring influence of Bawden’s work on a new generation.

Now based in Bedford, Christopher Brown continues to produce new prints and illustrations informed by a love of place, history and graphic tradition.
