<p>Jack Firth, whose book Scottish Watercolour Painting (1979) remains arguably the best work on the subject, was an accomplished painter who specialised in watercolour. He studied under Gillies during his time at Edinburgh College of Art from 1935 to 1939, returning to teach drawing from 1955 to 1970. He painted Paris, Edinburgh and Cornwall with many maritime and harbour subjects and was exhibited widely.</p>
