Join Lachlan Goudie, renowned contemporary Scottish artist, broadcaster and presenter of BBC Four’s The Story of Scottish Art discussing his new book. The Story of Scottish Art is a page-turning narrative full of scandals and rebellions, seismic historical events and personal tragedies that inspired or destroyed artists. Lachlan brings these artists’ stories to life, offering his perspective as a contemporary Scottish painter with a deep personal connection to Scotland’s artistic heritage. Richly illustrated with diverse artworks from both famous and less well-known artists, including sculpture, photography and architecture alongside a strong tradition of Scottish painting, he explores what is distinctive about Scottish art and how the cultural identity of Scotland has developed through the ages. Connecting Scotland to the global story of art, showing how Scottish artists have engaged with art traditions outside of Scotland and how they have influenced such movements as Art Nouveau (Charles Rennie Mackintosh) and Pop Art (Eduardo Paolozzi).

A New Power: Photography in Britain 1800-1850
Until 7th May
The announcement of photography’s invention in January 1839, first in Paris and then in London, introduced a ‘new power’ into British life. This new power – derived from photography’s capacity to automatically capture the images created in a camera – was soon being used for every conceivable purpose. A New Power: Photography in Britain 1800–1850 explores the early history of photography, starting with the invention of the medium and the earliest dissemination of photographic images in Britain and ending with the famous Great Exhibition of 1851. It examines the broad range of uses that photography would quickly come to fill, from documenting the invention of celebrity to the very first ‘travel photography’ and how this helped to shore up colonial sensibilities. By showing how photography intersected with all aspects of a nascent modernity, A New Power reveals photography’s crucial role in making Britain the society it is today.
