Great Scots | The Exhibition
When the country went into lockdown on the 23rd March 2020, our lives changed dramatically. As the world around us closed down, our instinct was to reach out to our artists and allow them to have a voice and creative platform during the lockdown. For many artists, working in isolation is a way of life. Great Scots in Isolation is a series of short, 1-2 minute films made by a wide range of artists who are currently represented by The Scottish Gallery. These artists are from Scotland and the UK and have very kindly agreed to reach out and say hello, share their views, or have made a creative visual for us.

We are grateful to all the artists who have made a short film during this time and so far, we’ve had positive feedback from our gallery friends – the films have helped, in a small way, to offer some support and a creative distraction whilst we all experience the lockdown together. Great Scots, The Exhibition is our way of continuing to support our artists. Many of the art works featured have been created during the lockdown.
Emily Sutton | People and Places
The Directors of The Scottish Gallery are delighted to present People & Places by Emily Sutton. Emily Sutton studied Illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art and is now based in York. She combines her exhibition work with illustration projects, including many picture books for children.
Emily Sutton has designed a beautiful, fold out, limited edition invitation for this exhibition, which we are selling to raise money for The Supper Collective. Click here to read more about how this incredible invitation came together, or click here to purchase one.

The preparation for this exhibition has been very much divided into two parts. It began last year with trips to the Yorkshire coast and further afield to Paris with my sketchbook to draw, paint and collect material which I then used as the basis for a series of watercolours. The second part was a direct reflection of the shrinking down of life - rather than responding to scenes from the outside world I focused instead on smaller, more focused subjects in the form of still lives. During a time of uncertainty it was comforting to put my attention towards favourite collected objects and optimistic spring flowers.

Emily Sutton, 2020The title of the exhibition, People and Places, was decided before the world came to a standstill. It was the title of a small book of drawings that I began as a student at ECA in which I would make daily observational sketches, something that has stayed with me to this day and is the basis for all my artistic practice.
Michael Lloyd at 70 | Reflections
The Scottish Gallery celebrates Michael Lloyd’s 70th birthday this June with a collection of new work; each a love letter to the flora and fauna that continues to inspire his work.
To accompany Michael Lloyd’s exhibition we have created a series of blogs, allowing you to explore each work in depth with imagery, film, music and words from Michael Lloyd himself.
You can read our blog here and view the series of short films here.
