Nel Linssen (1935–2016) was one of the most important and original voices in contemporary jewellery, internationally celebrated for transforming humble materials such as paper, pigment and thread into works of extraordinary sophistication, intimacy and beauty.
Born in Mook/Middelaar in the Netherlands, Linssen developed a practice that challenged conventional ideas of preciousness within jewellery, replacing traditional materials with subtle explorations of texture, colour, movement and touch.
Working intuitively yet with immense technical understanding, Linssen created necklaces and bracelets composed from meticulously folded, layered and coloured paper elements. Though visually delicate, her works possess remarkable structural complexity and emotional depth. The repetitive rhythm of tiny individual forms creates jewellery that moves fluidly with the body, constantly shifting in response to gesture, light and perspective. Her pieces are deeply tactile and sensuous, inviting both wearer and viewer into an experience of quiet contemplation and physical awareness.
Central to Linssen’s practice was the relationship between jewellery and the body. She understood movement not as incidental but as integral to the work itself. As the wearer moves, surfaces open and close, colours subtly alter and shadows deepen, giving the jewellery an almost living quality. This sensitivity to articulation and touch distinguished Linssen as a true innovator within contemporary jewellery, creating works that felt both profoundly modern and deeply human.
What makes Linssen’s jewellery so extraordinary is the tension between fragility and strength. Through years of experimentation and haptic understanding, she elevated paper into a material capable of carrying memory, intimacy and emotional resonance. Her restrained palettes and repetitive structures possess a meditative quality, reflecting an artist deeply attuned to rhythm, silence and material sensitivity.
The Scottish Gallery shared a particularly close and valued relationship with Nel Linssen spanning more than two decades. Over the years, the Gallery proudly exhibited her work extensively, championing her remarkable contribution to contemporary jewellery in Scotland and beyond. In 2015, The Scottish Gallery celebrated her 80th birthday with a special exhibition, and poignantly, one of her final exhibitions during her lifetime was held with the Gallery, reflecting the warmth and significance of this enduring partnership. Nel Linssen remains one of the most admired and beloved jewellers associated with The Scottish Gallery programme.
Her work is held in major international museum collections including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museum of Modern Art, Arnhem; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Brooklyn Museum, New York; Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
