Nature in Detail

30 March 2023 - 29 April 2023

Katie Watson graduated from The Glasgow School of Art’s Jewellery and Silversmithing department in 2018. Her work has already gained attention, receiving numerous awards from the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council.

Katie’s work starts with a walk through woodlands, along the coast and across mountains – mainly around her hometown of North Berwick and The Isle of Arran in Scotland. On these adventures she draws and studies anything that captures her imagination. Using silver as a canvas, Katie begins drawing onto the metal surface using chasing and repoussé to produce wonderlands of nature in unique pieces of silverware and jewellery.

My designs start with a walk through woodlands, along the coast and across mountains. Mainly around my hometown of North Berwick and The Isle of Arran in Scotland. On these adventures I draw and study anything that captures my attention in detail, and create a design enriched by my imagination.
Using silver as a canvas, I translate my drawings onto the metals surface using chasing and repoussé and from this I produce wonderlands of nature in unique pieces of jewellery and silverware. My work aims to transport you on a journey outdoors, immersed in nature and surrounded by wildlife. I like to bring scenes to life by conveying a sense of movement within a piece, from the interweaving flow of water ripples, wild grasses swaying in the wind and birds soaring high.

Katie Watson is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, where she studied Jewellery & Silversmithing from 2014-2018. After graduating, she undertook the post-graduate course at Bishopsland Educational Trust before setting up her first studio in Edinburgh.
She has won several prestigious awards for her designs, including Gold and Bronze awards from the Goldsmiths Craft and Design Council and The Silver Society Prize for Silversmithing ‘Best Newcomer’ award.  Her work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally – often being talent spotted by design organisations.

Katie is now resident at Marchmont Silversmithing Studios in Berwickshire.
