Soft Divide

4 June 2026 - 27 June 2026

Working primarily in alabaster, Cook creates vessels and sculptural objects that are at once solid and atmospheric, shaped as much by light as by the hand. Soft Divide also introduces a new body of work in bronze.

Self-taught, Cook’s practice has developed through sustained engagement with materials, arriving at a focused exploration of stone. Alabaster, with its delicate translucency, allows light to enter and move within the form, revealing internal structure and subtle variations that shift throughout the day. Each work is conceived with an awareness of its environment, responding to changing conditions of light and space. His forms balance geometric clarity with organic movement. Edges soften, surfaces undulate, and volumes appear to expand and contract, suggesting a quiet sense of motion held within stillness.

Born: 1992
Place of Birth: Bristol

Oliver Cook is an artist creating abstract sculptures and vessels primarily using alabaster, a material known for its delicate translucency. Self-taught, his practice has evolved naturally while exploring the interplay between stone and light, geometric and organic, solid and void.

His methods draw on traditional carving methods and skills learned in ceramics and woodwork. Cook’s work is a quiet dialogue between material and luminosity, inviting viewers to engage with the subtle, shifting qualities of alabaster as light subtly diffuses within the stone.

In 2024 he became a QEST scholar (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) to start a series of workshops in Italy, Spain and the UK to hone his skills working with stone under the tuition of master craftsmen and to begin scaling up & casting works in Bronze. He works from his studio outside Stockport.
