With wit, warmth, and ambiguity, The Women of the Parish invites us into Kate Black’s carefully observed world where art and life are closely intertwined, and where every detail tells part of a larger, untold story. This, her first solo exhibition with The Scottish Gallery, promises to be an immersive installation which will transform our Georgian interior into a fictional world.

Working in collage, printmaking, and textiles, Black draws inspiration from British folk art, antiques, and the domestic rhythms of her hometown of Malton, North Yorkshire. Black’s practice explores the emotional weight of domestic labour and the fine line between comfort and constraint. Her characters are shaped by memory, repetition, and the physical spaces of homes, chapels, and kitchens.
