Duncan Shanks was born in Airdrie in 1937 and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1955–1960, later receiving a travelling scholarship which allowed him to visit Italy during his Post Diploma year. Returning to Glasgow, he joined the staff at the School of Art, where he lectured until 1979 before dedicating himself fully to painting.

Una Shanks studied textiles at Glasgow School of Art from 1958, joining the innovative department led by celebrated designer Robert Stewart. Her early training in pattern, structure and decorative design continues to resonate throughout her painting practice, where intricate surface detail and luminous colour are central to her work. Following graduation, Shanks held a number of teaching posts, including at Jordanhill College and Hamilton College, before taking early retirement in 1982 to devote herself fully to painting.
